History? Blogger Makes it to the CRTC!

December 3rd, 2009 · 26 Comments

Good news for those following my blog … especially the postings I’ve done re the fight between the television networks and cable companies over signal use  .. licensing … and private television’s plea for a share of cable revenues etc.

H.O. has been invited to appear before the Commission at its hearings on Tuesday morning, Dec 8  via videolink from Vancouver.  I am certainly pleased with this invitation since 16,700 comments were posted on the CRTC Website for this hearing, and approximately 173,000 comments were submitted through the third parties/campaigns.

For those interested in my position on this topic, I suggest reviewing my previous posts:

Wish me luck.

Maybe this time around the CRTC will listen to the likes of a former prestigious media personality since in this fight, they can’t side with the usual suspects – industry – since they are fighting amongst themselves for a piece of a pie they already share….at the expense of us viewers.

Makes sense to me. Long experience in broadcasting, successful participation in alternative journalism, articulate and mostly logical too.

I hope others who retired from broadcasting with great reputations intact will speak up as well. Eh, Mr. Bell?

I would wish you “luck” Harvey, but you don’t need any! You will be well armed!
Try not to confuse them with the facts. Facts and Agency’s like that are total strangers.

    Cheers!

Hats off to you on this one!

  • 7 Henri Paul // Dec 4, 2009 at 1:46 am

Say Hi to Konrad von Finckenstein from Henri Paul…..

  • 8 connie // Dec 4, 2009 at 4:03 am

HO – I don’t know about this. Listening to someone like you who knows what he is about may be altogether too much for them.
I am glad you will be doing this. They couldn’t invite better.

Wow, such an honour and you deserve it! This is Great news Harvey

harv, dont forget to talk about net neutrality too! I know it isnt really the topic at hand with the CRTC, but they made yet another ERROR when they allowed the LARGER ISP’s to throttle back the pipe to the customer!

considering the comments made at the CRTC web site from “regular folk” has been over whelming AGAINST a fee paid by the consumer to the conglomerate media corporations, it will be interesting to see how the CRTC makes themselves “relevant” in their ruling on this issue.

Give them hell Harvey! Somebody has to set them straight.

  • 12 Leah // Dec 4, 2009 at 7:53 am

Congrats Harvey!! They’ve actually invited someone to take part…and that someone knows what he’s talking about! How Refreshing!

You don’t need luck – just be yourself, always speaking your mind.

Best of luck Harvey. Make sure you tell it like it is.

  • 14 Kim // Dec 4, 2009 at 8:36 pm

    Congratulations Harv, give ‘em hell!

I’ll be watching with great interest on CPAC. I really enjoyed the banter Jim Shaw and his group had regarding this issue, and Cogeco had – the latter spelled it out in GREAT verbiage.

The word “LOCAL” has been ‘jacked” by the networks to get their bailout money which will never be enough to service their crack habit.
Once upon a time the networks were a co-op of locally-owned private stations – the model broke when John Bassett died and the networks bought up all the local stations – reversing what WAS working. Local earnings did not stay in local stations but went into vast black holes in corporate Toronto.

(Response: I don;t think CPAC is covering the hearings live. But apparently the audio is available on the CRTC site .. not sure. h..o)

    Give em hell, Harvey!

while your there tell them that they are giving the people reasons to look for alternatives and driving more and more to the internet for real news, and live streaming for television.Cable and satellite is a boring and alternative, expensive to if you add the triplication,of the same show on three different networks and they want more cash?I for one will opt out of cable it is just not needed and to expensive already .(did I mention expensive),cant repeat that enough!

  • 18 Nancy // Dec 5, 2009 at 5:33 am

Excellent news! This is your forte (no accent key on my computer)! You don’t need luck – you’ve already got skill at speaking, formidable background knowledge and true intelligence on your side.

  • 19 Lynn // Dec 5, 2009 at 10:51 am

    I’m proud of you Harvey!
While you there can you ask if they can give me a bail out? I have messed up some of my investments. Huge risks, greater losses because I was so darn stupid.
Can’t wait for you to write about your experience. I wonder if your appearance will make it on TV?
Henri Paul-I so dearly appreciate your sense of humour!

(Response: Well, you would think the invited appearance before the CRTC ofa local reporter with 38 years news experience would merit good coverage. But the management may not like the message, so will be interesting to see if it’s covered …or how. :) h.o.)

  • 20 Masterofnothing // Dec 5, 2009 at 7:19 pm

CPAC has been covering the proceedings and here’s what some of you have missed. On CPAC, click on “Video On Demand” – type “CRTC” and it’ll lead you here: http://www.cpac.ca/forms/index.asp?s=CRTC&dsp=template&act=view3&pagetype=vod&lang=e

    (Response: Great info. Thanks! h.o.)

Great news, Harv! Congrats. They will finally hear some truth…

  • 22 Robert // Dec 6, 2009 at 5:02 pm

Talk about how our news reporters ahve become shills for the Govern, ment of BC. We need more competition . Sean Lesley in his report from the ledge on Sunday AM says at the End that the nDP is against the HST a populist stance and not that they Federally or Provincially care about the economy. Why are so many ending their reports with comments about how bad the opposition is and not holding the governments feet to the fire. NW to me with the add saying they are holding the governments feet to the fire are using false advertising. They then turn around and say are you comfortanble are your feet warm enough. No take them to task just lob softball questions and take the waffling answers. The papers are just as bad if not worse at bringing up the NDP past whether true or false. The reporters just repeat the gOv’s line.

(Response: My presentation must be limited to seven minutes … since there are also several other “citizens” from across the country invited to speak. I could go on for a half hour … but hope to pack a punch in keeping it real when I do speak. h.o.)

  • 23 Henri Paul // Dec 6, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Harv, any idea of approximate time you will be on Tue. mornng .
Yesterday I went to the CPAC site recommended by Masterofnothing // Dec 5, 2009 at 7:19 pm, it works likes a hot dam,I watched almost the first half of the hearings , hopefully I can be up to date today.
PS, forget about saying hi to Konrad von Finckenstein from Henri Paul, takes to much time off the clock.
PS,I wonder, maybe he has a short nick name you could use instead….

(Response: I only get SEVEN minutes MAX ..so there will be no greetings to them from anyone …not even me! ;) My own remarks, if I could, would run on a half hour! SEVEN minutes… but hope they’ll make an impact! All I can do is try. I’m up at 10:20 a.m. Ottawa time ..that’s 7:20 a.m. here…Yikes! I’m retired!!! h.o.)

  • 24 Genuine // Dec 6, 2009 at 9:21 pm

    Harvey,don’t forget hero’s can’t retire.God’s speed.

  • 25 Bill // Dec 7, 2009 at 6:15 pm

Harv, the one message I would give to the broadcasters is …..Take responsibility for your own actions.

(Response: I agree. They should. h..o)
