If you are at all interested in issues involving BC Hydro, the BC Utilities Commission and run of the river power projects .. I recommend you have a look at Monday’s Tyee column by Rafe Mair.
Mair, a former Social Credit cabinet minister, is no NDPer, which makes his take on all the above topics and the problems they pose for Premier Gordon Campbell all the more interesting.
Have a read.

Perhaps unfortunately, Rafe Mair has a record of being right on many environmental issues despite being a contrarian. He has been almost always correct on the open net fish farms issues. He is correct again on the run of the river projects, one of a few voices raised against powerful economic and political influences.
By the way, the Save our Rivers Society could be much more effective with additional financial support. Whether it is $5 or $50,000, help them, if you can. It would be a gift to future generations.

The Campbell legacy will be the inexorable march of property rights. What the Liberals have done is transform public collective goods into private property riiights and once done, this will never be undone since the legal system supports private property rights. To make the private property rights more valuable and allow the IPP’s raise finance, the province then buys the green power at a high tariff.
But BCUC thinks otherwise – the only dissonant view.

The August 7 report from the Ledge had a slightly different tone today. Largely because, compared to Bill Good, Smythe is a critic to everything and everybody. But I thought the Canwest Global boys were more circumspect in commenting on Campbell’s government. Palmer still tried to play the Burrard Thermal misinformation but otherwise, a session harder to criticize.
The important point I aim to make is that fact based criticism of main media will sharpen them and encourage improved accuracy. Your blog has helped in my view. Some of the working journalists may dislike being slammed but good and fair work is the best defense.

I profess to know very little about power generation and defer to logic in my take on the run of the river projects championed by the Liberal government. They have shifted from the green of the environment to the green of money. Their objective seem to be shifting the money from the taxpayer to their friends and monetary supporters. Maybe it is time for a judicial enquiry into IPPs. This just doesn’t pass the smell test.
To Rafe. Keep the heat on for as much as you can.
