It has always been Stephen Harper’s and the Conservatives’ biggest challenge … trying to convince Canadians that they are not right-wing, redneck, homophobic, xenophobic, evangelical bigots.
This reputation, I believe, has seriously hurt their attempts to win majority government.
Now, despite all his denials of his being a homophobic party, Harper is reaffirming the validity of the criticism against his party. Harper has (so far) decided NOT to dismiss Saskatchewan MP Tom Lukiwski from his caucus.
Lukiwski was revealed in a video tape released by the NDP two days ago describing people thusly:
“There’s As and there’s Bs. The As are guys like me. The Bs are homosexual faggots with dirt under their fingernails that transmits diseases.”
True he said it 17 years ago ..and he may have been drinking at the time. And Likuwsk has apologized … but not in an any self-directed mea-culpa after looking back at his life/views: only after the taped remarks appeared on television, radio and in the newspapers.
Replace the words “homosexual faggot” with niggers, kikes, chinks, frogs or other such despicable derogatory word: do you think he would still be in the caucus? Or is “faggot” bad …but Tory tolerable?
I believe he would be gone …and until Harper and the Tories start to not only talk the talk about tolerance, but also walk the walk .. and boot the boob … the homophobic reputation of the Tories will only be reinforced.
